You need a Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance (hereafter: DBHI) and an additional Aon Student Insurance.

Advice
The DBHI is mandatory until the end date of your employment/internship. The DBHI provides coverage for medical care (general practitioner, specialist visit, hospitalization, medication, etcetera). However, not all medical care is covered, because physiotherapy, psychological treatment and urgent dental expenses are not covered with the DBHI.
The Aon Student Insurance with secondary medical cover does cover these types of expenses and also keeps you covered for social repatriation, liability, legal assistance, your personal items and includes an accident cover.

Dutch Basic Healthcare Insurance
You can apply for a DBHI with several suppliers in the Netherlands, among which, but not limited to: Zilveren Kruis, CZ, ONVZ, Menzis, Zorg en Zekerheid and VGZ. The start date of employment will apply as the start date of your DBHI.
It is important that you apply to the DBHI as soon as possible after starting your employment. If you do not conclude a DBHI(in time)this may lead to a fine from the Centraal Administratie Kantoor(CAK).

Additional Aon Student Insurance
Once you concluded the DBHI you can switch your Aon Student Insurance to the secondary coverage for which you are entitled to a 55% discount on your monthly premium. To receive this discount, you will have to edit the ‘EHIC’ section to ‘Yes’ in your online account.

Be aware that this discount cannot be applied retrospectively, so make sure you do this as soon as your DBHI started or when you know the start date of your DBHI.

End of DBHI
Please keep in mind that once you stop working / finish your internship, that you no longer have the right to the DBHI and that you will have to terminate your DBHI.
As soon as you know the end date of your DBHI (end date of work contract or internship agreement), you also will have to switch back to your primary Aon Student Insurance (without the discount). To go back to your primary Aon Student Insurance, you will have to edit back the EHIC option in your online account to ‘No’. It is very important you take this step, otherwise you will not have a valid medical cover under the Aon Student Insurance.

Please keep in mind that DBHI insurers do not inform you up front about the end date of your entitlement to a DBHI (end date of work/internship), so please make sure that you switch back in time as mentioned above to avoid that your DBHI will be terminated retrospectively at a later moment, leaving you with an uninsured period.
